It’s Thanksgiving this week in the US, so let’s just talk some turkey here!
The foods we’re going to look at in this series—turkey, sweet potatoes, spinach, pumpkin, pie & ice cream— are foods we the founders of propheticdreamers.com and our family have personally seen in dreams that provided supernatural insight to us.
We’ll share the dreams these elements were a part of, the real-life context and outcomes of the dreams, and the dream element symbolism we learned from these experiences. Today, the turkey.
TURKEY- THE CENTERPIECE OF THANKSGIVING
On the surface, the turkey seems to be a respectable and dignified subject. You might have even heard that Benjamin Franklin suggested the turkey as the US national emblem!
Back in 1784, Franklin wrote a letter to his daughter “For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen the Representative of our Country… For the truth the turkey is in comparison a much more respectable bird; and withal a true original Native of America…”
So why, then, in a couple of our dreams, has the Lord used the turkey as a negative symbol?
One clue lies within that same letter, when this forefather reveals a couple of downsides of using the turkey as the national emblem… “He is besides… a little vain & silly.” This comment refers to the birds’ habit of strutting around woods and clearings puffing themselves into feathery balls and filling the air with exuberant gobbling.”
Another lies in this text, “[he] would not hesitate to attack a Grenadier of the British Guards who should presume to invade his farm yard with a red coat on.” While Franklin considers the turkey “a bird of Courage,” the Lord apparently considers him provocative, short-tempered, and quick to fight.
TURKEY DREAM STORY #1- BLOODY TURKEY DREAM
LIFE CONTEXT
Our middle school son returned to a musical theater company he had participated in the prior year. He had matured quite a bit in the interim and his performing skills were sharper than ever.
Our son brought a fresh resume demonstrating performance success in other venues and stood before the judge ready to sing what he had prepared. The woman immediately pushed the paper he handed her aside and made a negative and judging comment saying that he would have to “pay his dues” for being disruptive in the past, that he would not get a leading role regardless of his audition performance.
Wow! Way to treat a 13-year old struggling to grow up! Shame on you, _____________.
THAT WEEK’S DREAMS
BLOODY TURKEY DREAM-
Our other son saw in a dream a simple picture of his brother looking down at a turkey lying on the ground with its guts open as if in biology class but bloody.
FRAMED MONKEY DREAM-
In a dream that week, my attention was drawn to a 3-D monkey in a framed picture on the wall.
MEL GIBSON DREAM-
In another dream, I was sharing lunch with Mel Gibson (nice!) when I spit on his french fries (gross!)
THE INTERPRETATIONS AND RESPONSES
God’s message to me in the Framed Monkey Dream: Since monkeys in prophetic dreams symbolize foolishness, I knew God was telling me that “a new memory is coming to the family concerning foolishness”.
God’s message to our auditioning son in the Bloody Turkey Dream: “Don’t fret about what’s happened. This person is not to be taken seriously. She’s a turkey; puffed up and gobbling non-sense. Let this one go. I’ll handle your life and destiny, not her.” Though disappointed, our son received that message.
God’s message to me in the Mel Gibson Dream: “I know that you’re tempted to confront this theater director on behalf of your son, but it would be like spitting on her fries. Exercise self-control”. I received needed correction since, by then, I was already on the warpath to defend my son.
TURKEY DREAM STORY #2- TURKEY IN THE OVEN DREAM
LIFE CONTEXT
As some of you know, I am a degreed music educator specializing in voice, choral music, and musical theater. I’ve spent many years working in churches, schools and in private coaching.
At the time of the dream, my husband and I were praise team members in an African-American church. He played the drums while I sang tenor and assisted the worship team leader as needed. Although we immensely enjoyed the church, the pastors, our friends there, and praising God in our native tongue; there were issues.
The talented worship leader was recruiting new singers and instrumentalists to his personal music group. The recruited musicians, having limited time in their schedules, would generally quit the church worship team, which dimished growth in the church and watered down our worship effectiveness.
While he was trying to “prove wrong some folks from his childhood that put him down” per his own testimony; I was simply enjoying praising the Lord as a direct answer to prayer, yet feeling as if I were perceived as an enemy or threat.
THE DREAM
TURKEY IN THE OVEN DREAM-
The dream was short. The worship leader and I were in a commercial kitchen. He was preparing a turkey to be roasted. I saw it in the baking pan as he was preheating the oven. Interestingly, I had a cake in the oven… baking nicely.
THE INTERPRETATIONS AND RESPONSES
God’s message to me in the Turkey vs. Cake Dream: God was comparing our lives and goals. Because our inner thoughts and motives are not hidden from our Heavenly Father, and because God moves in our lives accordingly— I was given a glimpse of our relative futures given our current spiritual statuses. This talented group leader’s mission was seen by God as “vain and silly,” but I would be producing something sweet for others to partake in.
SO WHAT DOES A TURKEY MEAN IN PROPHETIC DREAMS?
Something which is “vain and silly” and will not be blessed.
A person who may appear big and spectacular, but is not to be taken seriously.
Someone whose ideas are flawed.
As the term “turkey” is used in the vernacular to describe a person is- a goof-ball.
THE OUTCOMES
The Children’s Theater Director- We have no idea what’s going on in her life.
The Worship Leader- He has continued his mission and his group performs here and there locally.
Me- My cakes are out of the oven available internationally to those who find them.
Our Son- Someone wanted to prevent him from moving forward in his musical journey. Years later he is a successful music producer in Nashville.
Remember: Each of us receives our own dreams, and each of us knows our own state of affairs. Dreamers are intended to make the best interpreters of their own dreams as they grow in understanding of the parabolic language of dreams.
