Dancing With The Stars

Part 1 of a 4-Part series on Dreams Related to Death by Rev. Lynmarie

This past month, my dear mother-in-law, Helen, went to be with the Lord. Naturally, dreams are part of the story. Dreams prophesied her death, ministered to her personally from time to time, and changed her life from temporal to eternal.

In this post I will share the one life-changing dream story; and in the next post, a few that prophesied her death.

I was honored to have called Helen “mom” and to have become the closest of friends for so many of her 96 1/2 years. We shared countless ups and down, losses and disappointments, blessings and joys. I saw her grow in her faith and she in mine.

“Lammy” (as she was affectionately known by our family) was a woman of wisdom, discretion, integrity, mercy, and genuine heart for everyone she met… from her great-grandchildren to the clerk at the pharmacy. I never met anyone who didn’t like her.

It wasn’t until she was about 80 years old that she took up tap-dancing, and that I witnessed a new freedom in her spiritual journey. Until then, she hadn’t really grasped the concept of the abundant life as expressed in Matthew 6:25-34… i.e., “Don’t worry; be happy”.

Then one Friday night, Frank and I had a scare after I awakened from a vivid and disturbing dream of her lying on the floor stone cold dead. Since the Lord speaks to our family through dreams, Frank and I took it seriously.

Not sure exactly what God was saying at the time, we felt led to arrange for mom to accompany us to church and attend a Sunday-School class for seniors and meet our dear friend, Bernice. Bernice, whom we had bonded with in the pews, was truly special— a red-haired Spanish nurse in her 80’s, and a real fireball!

After being seated with the seniors group, a leader made an announcement that was really quite shocking to us, particularly in a large and established church like Denver First Church of the Nazarene.

The man declared that they were cancelling Sunday school and dismissing everyone! What? There’s always someone who can facilitate something for the benefit of the Kingdom! We’d never seen a class simply dismissed in a lifetime of church attendance… and never have since!

It was quickly decided that Frank and I would go on to our regular class, while Bernice and mom would chat in the sanctuary. Hours later, when we headed back to our SUV, we noticed that mom was glowing. Her smile was a mile wide, and the twinkle in her eyes unwavering.

God, of course, had known that the class would be called off that week— and that week only. And He also knew the power of one hour alone with Bernice.

Mom, who had apparently struggled with whether she was good enough, found out that the assurance of salvation doesn’t come through good works. John 3:17 and Ephesians 2:8-9 explain: For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast… For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

She had never overflowed with the Spirit of God (and the growing faith that accompanies it) because that Spirit, the Holy Spirit, had been absent up to that point in time. There was no assurance of salvation because there had been no salvation. She had never understood the power of the cross until Bernice explained it and led her in the sinner’s prayer.

So the dream had pictured mom’s current spiritual state of being— in need of spiritual life— so that it could be rectified.

In the years that followed that life-changing day, Mom— now equipped with the Holy Spirit— grabbed hold more and more of the peace the Lord wants us to have here on this earth.

Instead of lying awake at night worrying over this and over that, she often considered the words of Jesus (and the preaching of Joyce Meyer) eventually assuring others with them.

And just as she learned at an old age to dance to the music of life, she also learned to dance to the music of Jesus! Sometimes the melodies were uplifting, sometimes melancholy, but the music of Jesus is always beautiful. And just as she danced here on earth, she’s now dancing with the stars!

Next Post: dreams prophesying Lammy’s trip to the stars.
