Where in the World in Dreams

IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING GEOLOCATIONS IN DREAMS

Specific dreams of PLACES often come up in dreams.

We find ourselves traveling to another continent, visiting a different state or city, or re-entering our homeland. These are often exotic places, cities we have never visited, or locations where we once resided.

We have found the following clues to be quite helpful in interpreting the message within a dream.

Rarely literal, geographic locations elude to an outstanding feature of the place or what is it most known for, the meaning of the proper name, or maybe the nickname or motto associated.

Sometimes one city symbolizes another, or tells us that a past situation is resurfacing. Often, the symbolization originates from the dreamer’s culture or personal association with a place. Note the dream context.

CONTINENTS

Sometimes whole continents come up in dreams and symbolism may need to be discerned if they don’t seem literal by the context.

The most important factor is whether the dreamer has any personal connection with the continent or if it is their homeland. The examples below are of symbolization in dreams where the continent is NOT the place the dream resides or has resided:

We’ve had multiple dreams with traveling to Europe without any specific country coming up. They have consistently symbolized the old country, so that would be interpreted as something containing history and tradition.

In one dream, some friends of ours were moving away and if we came to visit, we were not welcome to even spend the night. The landlord of their home pointed out that this had something to do with the woman (but not her husband) being African. When the dream played out in life, it eventually became clear that the wife in a relationship we had with an African-American couple had lingering cultural perspectives which would interfere with continued development of the relationship with us.

About 98% of Antarctica is covered by ice that averages at least 1 mile thick. Therefore, this element in a dream might indicate that something will be delayed (on ice). See ice in our NATURE AND EARTH category.

NATIONS

We can tell you from experience, don’t count on dreams to be politically correct! Some countries have negative connotations because of what has taken place historically or what their current leaders are doing. Rather than being offended; remain open minded.

Again, the most important factor is whether the dreamer has any personal connection with the country or if it is their homeland. The examples below are of symbolization in dreams where the country is NOT the place the dream resides or has resided:

CONSIDER THE COUNTY’S OUTSTANDING FEATURE

Consider what that country is known for. Some of these may seem obvious, and some may be difficult to obtain unless you’ve spent some time within that country. (If you know someone who has traveled the world or been to that country, you might start by asking them.) Below are some examples from our dream inventory.

CONSIDER THE NAME MEANING OF THE COUNTRY

There may be a hidden meaning behind the name. Perhaps the name is actually French, Spanish, Native American, etc.

EXAMPLES

The word Argentina means silver.
The word Ethiopia and Sudan both mean land of the blacks.
The word Ghana means warrior king.
The word Ireland means fertile.
The word Italy means bull.
The word Panama means abundance of fish.
The word Singapore (a Southeast Asian city-state off the southern tip of the Malay) means Lion City.
The word Trinidad means Holy Trinity.
The word Zimbabwe means house of stones.

CONSIDER THE SPIRITUAL CALLING or SPIRITUAL AUTHORITY

Perhaps the person who goes to the country in the dream has a calling to travel to that nation on a mission or ministry trip. Maybe this person is being told in the dream to pray for that country. There may be spiritual authority this person has through prayer.

CONSIDER THE BIBLICAL MEANING

Does the nation in the dream carry a Biblical meaning? Numerous countries are mentioned by name in the Bible and hold consistent symbolism. EGYPT represents bondage while ISRAEL is the promised land and land of milk and honey.

CONSIDER WHETHER THE NATION IS AN ENEMY

Is the country in the dream a declared enemy of the dreamer’s homeland? Leaders representing several nations have proclaimed loudly their mission to see the US go down (Iran, North Korea, etc.).

If you are from America (or any country for that matter), it is your homeland, the place you belong, the place of your citizenship. America may symbolize a place of blessing, abundance, or freedom.

One team member recently dreamed of returning to the US from a foreign country. It was about getting back to a productive career. In a more general sense, one could say it was a dream about returning to the place he belonged, a comfortable secure place we call home.

Another team member dreamed she lived in an unnamed foreign land and was slowly and diligently packing and preparing to move. After factoring in the rest of the dream, it was clear that this symbol pointed to Phillipians 3:20 “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ”. The message? You can’t take it with you!

While American’s exposure to Australia may be dominated the Crockodile Dundee movies and Outback Steakhouse commercials with the slogan, no rules; just right, one of our Australian readers submitted the following:

Essentially the country is vast, harsh, beautiful and dangerous. The people are resilient, creative, pioneering and inventive. I would describe Australians as having dry senses of humour. It’s also a very multicultural country. Recently heard it described as a small sample of the world. It’s laws are based on Judeo-Christian principles.

This country is a very long, yet narrow country. He north is very far from the south. We have seen Chili symbolize relational division. Notice the homophone: chilly. In other words, the relationship will go through a chilly season.

To Americans or Australians for instance, England signifies the mother country (and the name Brittany may carry the same significance.) From a Biblical perspective, the children of God are referred to as strangers and pilgrims in the book of Hebrews and I Peter in the New Testament. These passages infer that Heaven is the mother country.

A similar possibility for dreamers form counties which were originally British colonies is that England symbolizes the mother (the originator of or motive behind) something.

If you had to perceive what France or Paris are associated with world-wide, it might not take you long to come up with words like love or romance. In one significant dream, French currency was involved as the dreamer had to exchange their English pounds for francs. When the dream later proved to be prophetic, the French currency was Heavenly currency, signifying God’s love for us.

Though Mexico may mean several things depending on the dreamer and the context of the dream, it has always meant the same thing to me.

To provide a little background, I used to live near the border and during one season of my life, crossed over weekly for business and occasionally for pleasure. I have never traveled to a resort city in Mexico.

However, Mexico has always symbolized a resort, vacation, or time-out (not a place I am to dwell).

Russia and countries with similar governmental structure (communism) most likely represent a place of oppression. Historically, their leadership and its system have treated their people with tyranny. Russia has surfaced in several of our dreams clearly signifying this.

Several possibilities. In one dream about a son (who was having difficulty with self-confidence), the teen traveled to India in the mother’s dream. Life never took literally to India, but he soon developed a comedic routine with an Indian accent which took him to a new level of confidence!

The most notable feature of Sweden is the Nobel Prize Organization most famous for the Nobel Peace Prize. This group brings the world together by awarding Nobel Prizes for achievements in physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, and literature as well. We have seen this country in a dream signify the dreamer moving to peace, unity, harmony.

This county carries a similar implication as Sweden, but is associated with neutrality rather than peace. A dream that depicts the dreamer as living to Switzerland might be saying something about the person’s refusal to take sides, whether good or bad in that particular situation.

STATES

STATES, PROVIDENCES, OR COUNTIES

• THE RESURFACING OF A PAST SITUATION (OR A SITUATION SIMILAR TO A PAST SITUATION)

If the state is one that you previously resided in, consider that the proper name of the street may be insignificant, but that a situation similar to the past or the ramifications of a past situation may be resurfacing.

• ASSOCIATED THOUGHTS OR EMOTIONS

If the state is one that you previously resided in, consider that the proper name of the street may be insignificant, but that your FEELINGS about that state may be important.

I once lived in California. It was while I was young and single, and then the first few years of our marriage before we had any children, and when we began a small business. When I dream of traveling to or from CA, it generally speaks of starting all over again, or a honeymoon season.

• DIRECTION

Consider the DIRECTION the state is from you. North, south, east, and west have significance. Find those under the category NATURE & EARTH.

• FEATURES

Consider the most outstanding GEOGRAPHICAL feature of the state, like mountains.

REPUTATION

Consider what the state is known for such as gambling, mining, politics, steel production

• NAME MEANING

Consider the hidden proper name meaning.

COLORADO, due to the color of the earth there, is a combination of the Spanish words for color and red, colorear and rojo.

NEVADA was named by Spanish settlers. Nevada literally means covered with snow. Interestingly, snow has Biblical implications. See our NATURE AND EARTH category.

CITIES

CONSIDER IF THE CITY SPEAKS OF A PAST TYPE OF SITUATION RESURFACING

If the city is one that you previously resided in, consider that the proper name of the city may be insignificant, but that a past situation or the ramifications of it may be resurfacing.

CONSIDER ASSOCIATED THOUGHTS OR EMOTIONS

If the city is one that you previously resided in, consider that the proper name of the street may be insignificant, but that your feelings associated with that city may be important.

CONSIDER POSSIBLE RESIDENCE OF LOVED ONES

If the city is one that a close relative or loved one lives in or near, consider that the situation in the dream may apply to something related to that person.

CONSIDER THE CITY’S REPUTATION

Consider what stands out about that city.

I recently dreamed that at that the end of my stay in Florida, I asked my brother to take me to Orlando. He refused. The dream turned out to be prophetic and brought me comfort after this brother’s testimony in court did not lead to instantaneous victory, but rather a 2-month continuance.

Orlando may symbolize Disney World!

I student taught in Chicago, but never knew that the term “windy city” referred more to the political reputation (lots of hot air and corruption) than to the element of nature. Numerous dreams confirm that connotation.

We have found the symbolism of Quebec in dreams to be the same as France because the population speaks French.

FRANCE
If you had to perceive what France or Paris are associated with world-wide, it might not take you long to come up with words like love or romance. In one significant dream, French currency was involved as the dreamer had to trade in their English pounds for francs. When the dream later proved to be prophetic, the French currency was the currency of Heaven signifying the love of God for us through the crucifixion.

CONSIDER WHETHER ONE CITY IS SYMBOLIZING A SIMILAR CITY

I recently dreamed that it was my last day visiting San Francisco. Yikes, there are a bunch of possibilities with that one:

  • 1. The Spanish name means “free man”.
  • 2. A liberal culture, the origin of the hippie movement and center for homosexuals.
  • 3. One of the best harbors in the world.

4. I am confident that it was actually symbolizing a SIMILAR CITY, one also known for long bridges, Tampa.

CONSIDER THE MEANING OF THE NAME OF THE CITY

If the city in the dream is random, there may be a hidden meaning beneath the name. It may be Spanish, French, or Native American.

In 1781 Spanish settled on the west coast of what’s now California. The place was eventually named Los Angeles, meaning City of Angels. A dream taking place in an area populated by angels is a good dream.

A dream of moving to the city of New Orleans is a good dream. New Orleans is French for New Gold!

This oldest U.S. capital city in New Mexico also has Spanish origin and means Holy Faith. So a dream where you are late or lost trying to get there means that you are supposed to get to the holy faith.

In a dream from our inventory, the dreamer was specifically in Solona Beach in the lamp section of a store when he ran into a person he knew. He looked up Solona Beach to find that it’s a Spanish word meaning bright place. Shortly thereafter in real life, the dreamer attended a Christian Conference where prophetic ministry was highlighted where he had a negative encounter with this person.

CONSIDER A CITY MAY DYMBOLIZE A CITY WITH A SIMILAR NAME

I once dreamed I was flying to Charlottesville, VA, and within a week, took an unexpected flight with a connecting leg in Charlotte, NC.

BODIES OF WATER

CREEKS, RIVERS, LAKES, BAYS, GULF, OCEANS

CONSIDER THE MEANING OF THE NAME OF A BODY OF WATER

Keep in mind first that bodies of water carry their own general meaning (and that the name of a body of water in a dream may very well be insignificant). So check first for the meaning of that type of body of water under the category NATURE & EARTH.

CONSIDER THE MEANING OF THE NAME OF THE BODY OF WATER

If the proper name is quite impressive to you, the opposite may be true: that the PROPER NAME of the body of water brings its own meaning into the dream.

The Jordan River could represent something flowing downward or descending.
The Amazon River could symbolize the largest move of God in the world.
Lake Victoria, one of the African Great Lakes, may signify a victory.

CONSIDER IF THE BODY OF WATER IS SPEAKING OF THE RESURFACING OF A PAST SITUATION (OR A SITUATION SIMILAR TO A PAST SITUATION)

If, in the past, you spent a lot of time on or near the body of water in the dream, consider the possibility that a situation similar to the past or the ramifications of a past situation relating to that place may be resurfacing.

STREET NAMES

CONSIDER IT THE STREET NAME SPEAKS OF A PAST SITUATION RESURFACING

If the street involves a previous residence, consider that the proper name of the street may be insignificant, but that a PAST SITUATION or the ramifications of it may be resurfacing. Perhaps you have some unfinished business that goes back to that season of your life.

CONSIDER WHETHER YOU ONCE LIVED ON THE STREET

If the street involves the home you grew up in, look for the meaning of HOME which is: a place you belong or place of rest, safety, or relief (may be spiritual).

CONSIDER THE NAME MEANING OF THE STREET

If you are sure neither of those apply, the last (and rarest) possibility is that the PROPER NAME of the street brings its own meaning into the dream.

Ala Lani Street in Honolulu means road to the heaven.
Bachelor’s Walk in Dublin carries an obvious meaning although it was named in the 1670s after the Quays.
Peggy Lane in Evergreen, Colorado, is a nickname for Margaret which means the pearl.

BUILDING NAMES

CONSIDER WHAT THE BUILDING TYPE MIGHT SYMBOLIZE

Consider the type of building and whether that is more significant than its proper name. Is it a church, library, restaurant, business center, government building, etc.?

CONSIDER THE MEANING OF THE BUILDING NAME

The proper name may be in Spanish, French, or native American, and hold a hidden meaning.

The University of Denver’s School of Hospitality Management named the building that would house it the Joy Burns Center. In a dream, this could potentially be speaking of a place of joy.

CONSIDER THE BUILDING TYPE

Consider that BOTH of the above may apply. Black Cat Bistro in Boulder, Colorado, might symbolize bad fortune in association with taking in information, for instance. Badger’s Road Elementary in North Pole Arkansas might be speaking of a situation in which the dreamer will be badgered.

CONSIDER IF THE BUILDING SPEAKS OF THE RESURFACING OF A PAST SITUATION (OR A SITUATION SIMILAR TO A PAST SITUATION)

If you once worked in that building, consider the possibility that the name is insignificant, and the dream is speaking of a situation similar to the past or the ramifications of a past situation which may be resurfacing. Perhaps you have some unfinished business that goes back to that season of your life.
